KUCHING, June 24: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is confident that the new Speaker of the Dewan Negara will be a Sarawakian.
“Let’s wait for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of who will be the new Speaker,” he said when met at the opening of the Iban Cultural Symposium and Expo 2024 at the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) today.
The appointment of the new Speaker is to replace the late Datuk Mutang Tagal, who passed away in May of this year at the National Heart Institute (IJN) Kuala Lumpur.
Mutang was sworn in as the 20th Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat on February 19 at the age of 70.
He was the first Orang Ulu to be appointed to the position, in addition to having served as an MP for Bukit Mas in Sarawak from 1982 to 1990, with an educational background in the field of law. — DayakDaily
