KUCHING, Dec 24: Only in Sarawak do we find Christian and Muslim families living under one roof, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said in Sarawak, both religions also do not have issues having their churches and mosques located next to each other.
“This is Sarawak which is famous for its multi-racial and multi-religious society but has no problem with unity in diversity,” he said.
Abang Johari said Sarawak’s immigration autonomy has been able to protect its people from religious and racial conflicts by preventing religious extremists from setting foot in the State.
However, he pointed out, Sarawak is not completely immune from extremist elements that come to Sarawak through cyber channels such as social media.
“As the Head of the Sarawak government, I assure that the GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) government will always preserve religious freedom in this State and allow no extremist elements to affect the harmony of society and unity of the people in this beloved Land of Kenyalang,” said Abang Johari in his Christmas wishes to those celebrating the holidays today.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari also expressed his gratitude to all Sarawakians for giving GPS their biggest support in the 15th General Election (GE15) and bringing the voice of Sarawak to Parliament.
He said with one deputy prime minister and four full ministers from Sarawak now in the Federal Cabinet, Sarawak bears huge responsibilities to ensure national administration runs smoothly for the next five years.
“For the GPS government, the interests and rights of Sarawak as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is more important than anything else.
“An independent political platform through the formation of GPS is the best step to ensure Sarawak’s voice not to be drowned in the national scenario.
“No one will be more sincere than Sarawakians ourselves in the struggle to uphold justice for this beautiful Land of Kenyalang,” said Abang Johari. — DayakDaily
