KUCHING, June 6: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved a RM353 million allocation to develop Kapit in conjunction with the State-level official birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Kapit.

He said Kapit has developed rapidly after the completion of roads as the town centre is now full of traffic jams.

Thus, to thank the Kapit folk for supporting Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the last State election and to solve the traffic congestion in Kapit, he said the roads throughout the town will undergo upgrading under a project with a total allocation of RM190 million.

“This is our gift to Kapit. We hope the roads will be widened and Kapit will continue to develop as a big city in this Rajang area,” he said when attending a tea banquet in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s State-level birthday celebration held at the Kapit Town Square today.

Abang Johari also mentioned that a road project connecting Ulu Sg Katibas and Jalan Sg Bangkit will be developed with a cost of RM105 million.

“We are also developing Sg Tunoh and this area needs to be equipped with electricity. Thus, we will develop an electricity grid from Kapit to Tunoh which is about 35 kilometers distance,” he stated, adding that it will involved a cost of RM53 million.

At the same time, during a press conference after visiting Kapit Lily Pond, Abang Johari also said that he has requested the local council and Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) to look into installing smart traffic lights in Kapit town to regulate traffic flow.

Also present during the event were State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar and his wife Puan Sri Datin Amar Fatimah Mohamad Iskandar, Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department and minister-in-charge of the event Datuk John Sikie Tayai and his wife Datin Melia Gelen, federal Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs-cum-Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi and his wife Datin Sri Angelina Sylvester Ujang as well as Acting State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and his wife Datin Sri Baduyah Bujang. — DayakDaily
