KUCHING, Sept 30: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is hoping to set up labs to research algae for biofuel production in Bintulu and Gedong with the help of local universities.
He said this would be implemented by 2030 if the current research on algae growth on Sarawak lands are successful.
“Within the next eight years, if our research is successful, I want to establish (labs) in Bintulu and another one, with the help of a university, in Gedong.
“I want to try it out in Gedong. Hopefully it can be successful,” he said, adding that it would be a dream come true if rural people in Sarawak can start producing biofuel.
Abang Johari said studies have found that 1,000 acres of algae can roughly produce up to 20,000 barrels of biofuel, which can be converted into biodiesel and aviation fuel.
If those living in villages can grow their own algae and accumulate biofuel, he said, poverty in Sarawak can be eradicated.
“Just imagine, if our ‘orang kampung’ (villagers) can produce biofuel, they can be as rich as those in Saudi Arabia.
“If that is happening, we can end poverty, because even those in rural areas can produce and sell biofuel. That is my dream,” he said during the Sarawak Civil Service appreciation ceremony held earlier tonight.
Amongst those also present were Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai and State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
