KUCHING, Aug 4: With Sarawak’s own sovereign fund, all Sarawakians may one day be able to get free education in universities.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is his ambition for Sarawak in the future.

“My intention, for this sovereign fund, is to one day provide free education in universities to all Sarawakians.

“That is my intention. Whether I can do it or not, I leave it to God, but that is my ambition. The ambition from this ‘anak Limbang’ (son of Limbang),” he said when officiating at the Limbang Museum in Limbang here today.

For better management of the sovereign fund, Abang Johari said he and his delegates had visited three countries namely Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom, to learn from experts.

He said Sarawak will come up with its own approach, combining the different strategies derived from these countries.

“Norway, like us, has a resource-based economy. Singapore is non-resource-based, and UK has global management skills.

“So, I went to three countries, and everything is done. Sarawak will have its own approach because we are both resource-based and non-resource-based,” he said.

Abang Johari also noted the importance of high integrity in the management of Sarawak’s sovereign fund, which is savings for the future of the State.  — DayakDaily
