KUCHING, Aug 18: The Sarawak government is committed to increasing Internet penetration and speed across the entire Sarawak.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this to teachers and education staff who were present during the 51th State-level Teacher’s Day celebration in Limbang today.

He said this effort is important for Sarawak to succeed in the digital economy which involves high-investment digital infrastructure including cloud and optic technologies.

“Although there are challenges, as the leaders of Sarawak, my colleagues and I will work hard towards improving the Internet speed to at least 5G for the entire Sarawak.

“The ‘modal’ (capital) required for this will be huge, but we pray that Sarawak’s income will increase.

“Oil and gas prices are still high, meaning that our SST (State Sales Tax) [revenue] will remain high as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari also said that the Sarawak government is aware of its role to support the national education agenda, by providing resources to develop the local education scenario.

This is to enable education in Sarawak to be on par with the national standard for the benefit of young Sarawakians, he said.

Teachers are the main driving force in human capital development, and thus he urged them to equip students with high-quality knowledge of modern-day technologies for Sarawak’s development toward its 2030 aspirations. — DayakDaily
