KUCHING, Aug 12: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been invited to give yet another talk on hydrogen economy in Japan next month.

Earlier this year in May, he spoke at the World Hydrogen 2022 Summit in Rotterdam, highlighting Sarawak as a ‘rising tiger’ in renewable energy, and that it was ready for hydrogen economy.

“The world is moving towards hydrogen economy. I was privileged to be given the opportunity to present my paper at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, and I was the only Asian presenting the paper.

“God-willing, I’ve been invited to give a talk again next month in Japan on hydrogen economy,” said Abang Johari.

On the topic of new economies, he also mentioned Sarawak’s initiative to venture into carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) following the amendment of the Sarawak Land Code to enable its control over carbon emissions.

He said Sarawak is blessed to be listed as one of the four areas in the world that can store carbon.

“We are indeed blessed with that. Arising from that, of course, there is a new activity in our economy, that is carbon trading.

“It’s where we are going to stock carbon through our forestry sector as well as our storage areas within our waters,” he said in his speech during the IEM Sarawak branch annual dinner at a local hotel here tonight.

Among those also present were Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian and IEM Sarawak branch chairman Dato Ir Janang Bungsu. — DayakDaily
