MIRI, Sept 11: A total of 929 athletes from 14 secondary schools representing the southern, central, and northern regions of Sarawak gathered at Miri Stadium for the 50th Sarawak Sports Council (MSS) tournament.
The tournament will see the athletes participating in 441 events from today until September 14.
National sprinter Watson Nyambek led veteran athletes in carrying the tournament torch, which was then lit to mark the start of the tournament.
The tournament was declared opened by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, representing Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who is also Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak.
In his text speech, Abdul Karim said the event provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their performance and compete in a healthy environment.
“The tournament is a good programme to discover athletic talent among students.
“As we all know, Sarawak will host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2024, and of course, there will be some athletes competing in this tournament who will represent the State,” he said. — DayakDaily
