9 men arrested following viral armed riot incident at Debak snooker centre

KUCHING, May 30: Nine local men were detained for their alleged involvement in an armed riot incident at a snooker centre in Debak, Betong, on Friday (May 29) that went viral on Facebook.

According to Betong district police chief DSP Wan Mohamad Ali Wan Malek, a police report was lodged at 11.56am, which resulted in the arrest of the suspects, aged 23 to 35, between 2.30pm and 4pm the same day at various locations around Pusa and Debak.

“All suspects have been remanded for four days beginning May 29 to June 2 to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement.

He added that two of the suspects have prior records related to drug abuse, while one tested positive for ketamine.

“Initial investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a minor argument between two suspects who were under the influence of alcohol and were familiar with each other, leading to several of their friends becoming involved.

“Members of the public who were present tried to break up the fight. No serious injuries were recorded, and no elements of gangsterism were involved.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting while armed with weapons or dangerous items. — DayakDaily
