KUCHING, May 9: There were nine fatal road accidents reported in Sarawak during Op Selamat 20/2023 from April 20 to 28, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the accidents involving deaths recorded an increase of one case compared to Op Selamat 18/2022 last year.
Meawhile, the total number of road accidents reported throughout the operation this year was 457 cases, compared to 453 cases last year.
“Among the contributing factors to the increase in cases were human negligence while driving, road surface and vehicles that were not properly maintained before use.
“The addition of about 1,169,722 million vehicles using the roads throughout Sarawak during the operation period compared to 1,139,356 or an increase of about 30,000 (2.7 per cent) during last year’s operation also contributed to the number of road accidents,” he said in a statement today.
Azman further said the police have issued a total of 2,014 summons to road users for various traffic offences during Op Selamat 20/2023 which is a decrease of 74.7 per cent from 5,942 summons recorded last year. — DayakDaily
