SIBU, Aug 14: Some 95.2 per cent or 226,963 people, aged above 18 years old, have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in Sibu Division comprising Sibu, Kanowit and Selangau.

According to Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee,  87.3 per cent or 207,973 people had received the second dose in the division so far.

There are 34,440 eligible adults for the vaccine in the division.

“We are only left with about 19,000 people who are waiting for their second dose. This few weeks we have intensified our vaccination effort. We are now doing mobile vaccination at Pasar Malam, central market and at Pasar Tamu Taman Indah,” he said on his Facebook livestream today.

When asked by a viewer on whether Sibu has achieved a herd immunity, he said it not only depend on the number of people vaccinated but also on other factors, including not having new Covid-19 variant and the number of serious cases.

“Whether we have achieved a herd immunity or not, I believe we need to vaccinate as many people as possible because at the end of the day it will result in number of serious cases admitted to the hospital ICU dropping and that our hospital facilities are not overwhelmed,” said Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing and Local Government. — DayakDaily
