KUCHING, July 14: There are currently 4,624 Bumiputera contractors registered under the Contractor and Consultant Registration Unit of the Sarawak Financial Secretary’s Office (SFSO), constituting approximately 85 percent of the total 5,402 contractors.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said these contractors primarily handle physical projects in the Works Category.
“UPKJ will continue to monitor their performance and compliance to ensure that they maintain the expected and mandated standards and quality,” he said in a statement today.
He highlighted this after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak Financial Secretary’s Office (SFSO) represented by deputy finance secretary Hasmawati Sapawi and Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) by its chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Ir Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid for the digitalisation of registration processes and transactions of the construction sector today.
Additionally, Uggah who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, pointed out that the SFSO has established the Disciplinary Action Review Committee (JPTT) to take disciplinary actions against those who violate the regulations.
“The actions include the cancellation of the registration and blacklisting its shareholders and directors,” he added.
He also highlighted that the SFSO had issued a circular to ensure that 30 per cent of State government projects be awarded to Bumiputera contractors.
Acknowledging that there are both competent and problematic Bumiputera contractors in Sarawak, Uggah stressed the need to build up the professionalism, efficiency and capacity of local contractors.
“We want our Bumiputera contractors to achieve a world-class performance standards and that is why we are bringing in all these efforts, including creating all these programmes, ” he said.
