KUCHING, June 28: Eight students of a local secondary school here were apprehended by the police to assist in an investigation concerning a bullying incident.
According to Acting Sri Aman District police chief DSP Zuriawati Zainal Abidin, a report regarding the incident was received on June 25 at about 5pm.
The arrest took place after the authorities successfully identified the suspects by analysing a 41-second video.
“All eight students involved have been identified and have subsequently been taken to the police station for further inquiry.
“The police have initiated an investigation under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Additionally, if found guilty, the perpetrators may also face punishment of whipping,” she said in a statement today.
Zuriawati also advised the public to refrain from making any speculations that could potentially interfere with ongoing police investigations.
Spreading false information, she added, not only hinders the progress of the investigation but also has the potential to cause distress within the community. — DayakDaily
