KUCHING, Sept 17: A 79-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) along Jalan Field Force, Batu Kawa, last night.
The accident occurred at about 7.22pm near the junction of Lorong Field Force 3, when the victim was reportedly walking along the middle of the road.
Padawan District Police chief Superintendent Barry William said initial investigations found that the 36-year-old MPV driver was travelling from Batu Kawa towards Petra Jaya.
“When the vehicle reached the scene, it was travelling straight in the left lane and is believed to have struck the victim, who was in the same lane.
“The impact threw the victim onto the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8.32pm by an assistant medical officer from Sarawak General Hospital,” he said in a statement today as reported by TVS.
Barry said the driver, who was uninjured in the accident, was detained to assist with investigations.
Police checks also found that he did not have a valid driving licence, while the vehicle’s Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) and insurance had expired on Oct 30, 2025.
The MPV was subsequently seized for inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom).
Police are also tracing witnesses and reviewing dashboard camera footage to assist with the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — DayakDaily
