KUCHING, Mar 27: The Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force (PPMW5) foiled an attempt on Batang Igan waters for the unauthorised storage of 75,000 litres of diesel during a special operation held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri recently.
According to PPMW5 Deputy Commander Supt Rusdin Banin, a vessel was intercepted at around 4.30pm.
“However, the vessel’s skipper failed to produce any valid documents authorising the possession, storage, or transportation of the controlled material,” he said in a statement.
Following the interception, the skipper, who is a local citizen, was detained with four crew members, comprising two locals and two foreigners. Authorities also seized the vessel and the cargo containing the diesel.
“The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM9.45 million, indicating a serious offence under supply control laws,” he said.
The case has been handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sibu for further action under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961.
Under the Act, anyone found possessing, storing, or transporting controlled goods without a permit, licence, or special authorisation may face a fine of up to RM2 million, imprisonment, or both upon conviction. — DayakDaily
