KUCHING, Feb 23: There are 721 schools in Sarawak still without proper access roads, including 200 only accessible by river.
In addition, Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee told Parliament, there are 371 schools in Sarawak without electricity and are completely dependent on generator sets, as well as 428 schools without treated water supply.
“There are more than 1,020 dilapidated schools in Sarawak and out of this number, 415 schools are considered as in dire conditions.
“In Batang Sadong parliamentary constituency alone, there are 15 schools identified as dilapidated with their buildings requiring immediate repair,” she said when debating the Royal Address in Parliament, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Feb 21), according to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
As such, Rodiyah asserted that the issue of dilapidated or poor schools in Sarawak must be given immediate attention by the federal government so that students will not feel sidelined from enjoying all the facilities they are entitled to.
She stressed that the poor physical condition of schools not only creates discomfort during teaching and learning but the situation also put students and teachers at risk. — DayakDaily
