KUCHING, Nov 8: The 68-year-old pedestrian bridge connecting Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg to Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) has been demolished after inspections found it unsafe for public use.

The Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) informed that the demolition was successfully carried out on Nov 4–5, with plans to replace it with a new, modern bridge at the same location.

The old bridge, constructed before Malaysia’s independence, had long served as a vital crossing for hospital visitors and staff.

“Its maintenance responsibility was transferred from the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak to DBKU in 2006.

“Recent inspections revealed significant rusting and structural deterioration, prompting DBKU to take immediate action to prevent accidents,” DBKU said in a statement on Friday (Nov 7).

The footbridge that has been removed being transported away.

During the demolition period, DBKU installed a Signalised Pedestrian Crossing to ensure safe and convenient access for pedestrians.

The city hall has also appointed consultants to design the new bridge, which is expected to be completed in early 2026.

The upcoming bridge will be built to modern standards, improving safety, comfort, and accessibility for all users.

DBKU stated that the project aligns with its broader efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and transform Kuching into a Sustainable and Prosperous City.

DBKU expressed gratitude to the public for their patience and cooperation while the demolition and temporary measures were in place. — DayakDaily
