MIRI, April 1: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau women’s wing members on Sunday morning conducted on-the-spot eyesight tests and gave away free reading glasses to more than 600 people at Taman Jade Manis (also known locally as ‘Old Man Street’).
The programme which was held from 8.30am to 11am was the second such event organised by the party. The first was held at the old folks’ centre near Wisma Pelita Tunku recently.
Also present at this morning’s event was SUPP Piasau chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting.
The party branch had prepared more than 1,000 reading glasses to be handed out during the event.
Most of the recipients were aged 60 and above, with the youngest recipient aged 35-years-old.
The event also offered free eye examinations to the public.
Ting said the event was held as part of SUPP’s public service programme, especially for senior citizens as most of them have neglected their eye health and vision problems because of their low or fixed incomes.
“This is part of our effort to help people, especially the poor,” he said. — DayakDaily
