KUCHING, July 21: At 60 years old, Sarawak is progressing well with a bright future awaiting it.
Political pundit Dato Peter Minos said in 1963, when Sarawak signed the Malaysia Agreement 1963 to form the Federation of Malaysia with Malaya, Singapore, and Sabah, he was still a Form Two schoolboy in SMK Bau.
“When we heard that Sarawak would be free from British colonialism and is going to be self-governing on July 22, 1963, I, like other boys, was very happy and excited.
“Excited because we were about to be free and liberated from foreign domination; happy because we would be led by our own local leaders and are no longer controlled and strangled by foreign rulers,” said Minos in a statement.
He said 60 years later, as of today, the historical day of July 22, 1963, continued to be fondly remembered by him.
After 60, he said Sarawak has gone far on its own.
“Sixty years has changed everything. I refer to all the visible public utilities and facilities, the education and skill of the people, new industries, new attitudes, new politics and so on.
“It is almost a booming Sarawak now, with progress and advancement in all aspects everywhere.
“It has been a great and eventful 60 years. United and progressive, Sarawakians are a hardy and resilient lot. Well-led, they all work for the betterment of Sarawak, eagerly and steadfastly,” said Minos.
Minos foresees a harmonious and bright future for Sarawak in the years to come. It will not be a bed of roses, but there will definitely be much social and economic progress as well as more unity and prosperity. — DayakDaily
