KUCHING, Oct 24: Police have arrested a 57-year-old local man and seized over RM117,000 worth of methamphetamine (syabu) during a raid on a house at Lorong Rejang Park in Sibu.
Sibu District Police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) officers seized 2,055.85 grams of the drug on Oct 22.
“Based on information obtained during interrogation and directions provided by the suspect, the team conducted a follow-up inspection at a courier service premises at Jalan Maju, Sibu, and seized another 1,038.84 grams of methamphetamine,” he said in a statement today.
A total of 3,094.69 grams of syabu worth RM117,598.22 were confiscated which is sufficient to supply 15,474 drug addicts.
He added that a preliminary urine test found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, and that the man has three previous records — one each under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 420 of the Penal Code.
Investigations also showed that the suspect worked as a ‘runner’ and ‘storekeeper’ for a local drug syndicate active since April this year.
“The seized drugs were intended for the local market, with supplies obtained from Peninsular Malaysia using courier services,” added Zulkipli.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.
The suspect has been remanded for six days from Oct 23 to 29 to assist investigations.
“NCID is also actively pursuing other members of the syndicate still at large to ensure the network is completely dismantled.
“This success was the result of strategic cooperation between NCID of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sarawak and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in their joint efforts to combat drugs, the nation’s number one enemy, for the safety and well-being of the public,” he said.
Zulkipli has urged the public to report any drug-related information through the NCID Bukit Aman hotline at 012-208 7222 or NCID Sarawak at 017-592 9211. — DayakDaily
