MIRI, Nov 12: A total of 577 units of Raspberry Pi computers were distributed to 45 primary schools in this division by Senadin incumbent Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin today.

The presentation ceremony for the devices was held at the district’s education office (PPD) at Wisma Persekutuan.

Deputy PPD Miri officer Muhammad Syahmi Tan Abdullah received the devices on behalf of the schools.

“In line with the aspiration of the Sarawak Economic Development Agenda, the government is very concerned about digital literacy among our children and early exposure to computers.

“Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in schools is very important to enable our students to be proficient with computers,” Lee said.

He pointed out that one of the advantages of the Raspberry Pi is that it allows students to access learning content or materials that have been pre-loaded in the device via intranet network and is useful for teachers to facilitate the teaching and learning process at schools that do not have internet access.

“The Pi provides the experience of accessing the intranet which is similar to accessing the internet. It is the best platform for students to learn programming skills.”

Also present was incumbent for Piasau Datuk Sebastian Ting.

The internet is a globally-connected network of computers that enables people to share information and communicate with each other, while the intranet is a local or restricted network that enables people to store, organise, and share information within an organisation. — DayakDaily
