SIBU, Dec 15: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) successfully removed 56,294 social media posts containing elements of online fraud this year.
According to a report by Sarawak Information Department (Japen), Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching, stated that most of the detected posts were on the Facebook platform.
“This year alone, up to October, the losses caused by online fraud have reached RM1.2 billion, a staggering amount.
“However, at the same time, MCMC’s efforts to remove fraudulent posts have also increased,” she said during a press conference after attending a special interview session with SibuFM at the RTM Sibu office this morning.
Teo added that in 2022, only 242 fraudulent posts were successfully taken down.
“This number increased to 6,297 posts last year (2023) and surged further to 56,294 posts on social media this year,” she explained.
Teo further stated that amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act in Parliament, along with the 2024 Online Security Bill, are expected to raise public awareness and encourage individuals not to fall victim to online fraud.
Additionally, she explained that departments and agencies under the Ministry of Communications are actively addressing issues related to online fraud, including the increasingly prevalent issue of cyberbullying.
Also present at the event were RTM Sarawak Director Wan Azhan Wan Hamat and representatives from departments and agencies under the Ministry of Communications in Sarawak. – DayakDaily
