KUCHING, Nov 19: A total of 533 employees of the financially struggling low-cost airline MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline) had applied to receive benefits from the Employment Insurance System (SIP) under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) as of yesterday (Nov 18).

According to Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar, Socso has approved 277 applications out of that total, Bernama reported.

He gave assurance that his ministry will take necessary measures to prevent any form of oppression towards employees of MYAirline, regardless of their service contract status.

“Socso has also done what should be done thus far and is in the process of finding out whether the affected workers have received termination letters and so on,” he told reporters after attending the Socso Run&Ride 2023 event in Putrajaya today, as quoted by the news outlet.

According to Bernama, SIP aims to provide financial assistance to workers who have lost their jobs until they find new employment.

Earlier, MYAirline made an announcement stating that it will suspend its operations starting from Oct 12 until further notice. This decision was made due to financial pressures, which led to the suspension of operations while the company undergoes shareholder restructuring and company recapitalization.

Additionally, it was reported on Nov 2 that Sosco Group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed announced that the agency has implemented five intervention programmes to assist MYAirline employees in addressing their challenges. — DayakDaily
