KUCHING, July 21: A 50-year-old woman was killed after the car she was driving veered off the road and plunged into a lake near a local university in Kota Samarahan earlier today.

The victim, identified as Nur Shareefah Lusia Abdullah from Kampung Tanjong Poting in Singai, Bau, was driving a Perodua Bezza along the university’s internal road from Desa Ilmu towards SMK Muara Tuang when the incident occurred at around 10.45am.

Kota Samarahan District Police, through a report by investigating officer Damataries Lautin, said initial investigations revealed that the vehicle had been briefly parked by the roadside near a roundabout by the lake before suddenly going out of control and plunging into the water.

Nur Shareefah and her 17-year-old passenger, a student from SMK Muara Tuang, were inside the vehicle when it entered the lake.

The driver was pulled from the car and rushed to UNIMAS Prima Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead at 11.51am. The passenger, who is also from Kampung Tanjong Poting, escaped uninjured.

The vehicle, which belonged to Nur Shareefah’s sister, sustained damage to its front end and has been towed to the Kota Samarahan Traffic Police Station for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police are appealing to eyewitnesses or anyone with information on the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) report, they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 10.40am. — DayakDaily
