KUCHING, Aug 13: A 42-year-old man who threatened to kill his mother during a heated argument over money was sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today.
The court heard that the accused became enraged shortly after midnight on July 3 at their home in Matang when his 63-year-old mother refused to give him cash.
Armed with a wooden stick, he allegedly shouted a death threat at her, prompting the terrified woman to lodge a police report. Police arrested him the following morning at a workshop in Matang.
Prosecutors told the court that the unemployed man, the eldest of seven siblings, had a history of losing his temper and often ignored advice from family members. His mother, a widow, relies on her late husband’s pension for a living.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng urged the court to impose a stern sentence, highlighting the importance of protecting vulnerable victims and deterring similar offences.
