42 water village residents test positive for Covid-19, triggering Air Awat-Awat Cluster

KUCHING, Oct 12: Forty-two residents of a village on the water at Awat-Awat in Lawas have tested positive for Covid-19, sparking a new Covid-19 cluster which has been dubbed the Air Awat-Awat Cluster.

According to a report from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), a total of 78 people linked to the Air Awat-Awat Cluster have been swabbed and from this, 36 people have tested negative.

The community cluster is one of two new clusters disclosed by SDMC today. The second cluster dubbed the Putai 2 Cluster in Bukit Mabong in Kapit, is a workplace cluster.


Twenty-eight have tested positive for Covid-19 from a total of 86 people linked to the Putai 2 Cluster who have been swabbed.

The balance of 36 people tested negative.

SDMC said the Covid-19 patients from the Air Awat-Awat Cluster and the Putai 2 Cluster have been sent to various health facilities in Kapit and Lawas for treatment.

Meanwhile, four active clusters namely the Galaxy Cluster in Bintulu, Lubok Besai Cluster in Pakan, Jalan Upland Cluster in Kuching and Jundak Saeh Merah Cluster in Subis have been declared ended.

Thus, there are a total of 65 active Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak.

From this total, three reported 20 new Covid-19 cases including 18 cases from the Air Awat Awat Cluster.

The balance of two cases were one each from the Industri Jalan Semeba Cluster and the Pinang Jawa Cluster. — DayakDaily
