SIBU, July 5: The Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Ministry has identified over 40,000 hectares of land between Song and Ngemah to be turned into the “Dabai Belt” of Sarawak.
Stressing that the area will be designated for the production of premium dabai, its permanent secretary Sirai Daha said the effort will also make Song and Kanowit recognisable and distinctive among the districts in the State.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Sirai also revealed that a Song/Ngemah masterplan study will be conducted where other crop plants may be considered for the area.
“We have appointed Consortium Malaysia as a consultant to conduct the study.
“It is expected to start in August or September for a duration of six months,” Sirai told the media after officiating at the Agriculture Department Senior Officials Conference held at a local hotel yesterday.
On the “Tapah Belt” in Binyo, Bintulu and “Empurau Belt in Katibas, Song, the ministry’s focus will be on the establishment of research centres for specific native fish species.
About 300 officials from the Department of Agriculture and leaders from 28 Area Farmers’ Organisations (PPKs) across Sarawak took part in the three-day conference held from July 5 to 7 where 30 papers will be presented. — DayakDaily
