KUCHING, April 25: A 38-year-old local man who was caught on video attempting to rob a bank in Tabuan Jaya has been arrested by police, with investigations revealing that he has a prior criminal record and tested positive for drugs.
The dramatic incident, which quickly went viral on social media, shows members of the public intervening and successfully apprehending the suspect at the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrest yesterday (April 24), stating that the suspect confessed during initial questioning to being involved in the attempted robbery.
“A background check revealed he had one prior criminal offence on record.
“Preliminary urine screening also confirmed the suspect tested positive for drugs,” Alexson said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison, and may include a fine or whipping.
