KUCHING, Nov 3: Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly attacking a police officer with a meat cleaver while the officer was carrying out patrol duties during Sarawak Regatta 2025 at Kuching Waterfront yesterday (Nov 2).
Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident occurred when a police patrol team was conducting crime prevention rounds in the area.
“The suspect suddenly swung a meat cleaver towards an inspector who was on duty, causing a small tear on the left sleeve of the officer’s uniform.
“Fortunately, the officer was not injured,” he said in a statement today.
Police managed to apprehend the suspect at the scene. A background check revealed that the man has two prior criminal records.
“An initial urine test on the suspect returned negative for drugs,” Alexson added.
The case is being investigated under Section 332 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant while discharging his duty, which carries a maximum jail term of three years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Alexson also urged witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact the Kuching District Police Control Centre at 082-244444 or the investigating officer Insp. Ridzainuddin Rosley at 010-9431449. – DayakDaily
