KUCHING, Oct 3: A 32-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to four months in jail for the theft of a woman’s mobile phone and RM25 in cash.
The verdict was delivered by Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan after the accused, Johan Bujang, pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him.
He was charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years, in addition to a fine.
The theft took place in a residence at Kampung Bako Ulu, Jalan Bako, on the morning of September 29, around 5.30am.
According to the brief facts of the case, the 32-year-old victim discovered that her mobile phone, which had been placed on a table in her living room, as well as RM25 cash from her wallet, had gone missing. Despite conducting a thorough search of the premises, she was unable to locate the missing items, which were estimated to be worth RM700.
Fearing theft, the victim promptly filed a police report, which led to the accused’s arrest later that same day at around 11.30pm. An investigation revealed that Johan had gained entry to the victim’s residence through an unlocked front door before proceeding to steal the cash and mobile phone.
Prosecuting the case was Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while Johan was unrepresented by legal counsel. — DayakDaily
