MIRI, Aug 13: A total of 31 people pledged to donate their organs after death at the World Organ Donation Day and World Red Crescent Day Blood Donation event here today.
According to Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Branch Blood Donor Recruitment Committee chairman Karambir Singh, apart from that, 127 people successfully donated blood during today’s event.
The event, he said, is jointly organised by the Miri MRC Blood Donor Recruitment Committee and Organ Donor Recruitment Programme Sub-Committee in conjunction with World Organ Donation Day.
World Organ Donation Day is observed on August 13 and aims to raise awareness about organ donation’s importance and to encourage people to become organ donors.
In Malaysia, 10,893 people are waiting for organ transplants.
“Unfortunately, only 2,921 have undergone transplantation surgery since 1997. This means that there is a great need for organ donors,” Karambir said.
“Currently, this is the breakdown of the number of people awaiting transplants in Malaysia as follows; 10,623 kidneys (adult), 240 kidneys (paediatric), 11 livers (adult), 6 livers (paediatric), 11 hearts, 2 heart and lungs,” he disclosed. — DayakDaily
