OYA, Nov 9: A total of 31 forward bases have been set up across Sarawak to streamline and enhance the distribution of food aid during disasters, especially in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season.
In a TVS news report, Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah explained that these forward bases are essential for storing and distributing food to communities in hard-to-reach areas during emergencies.
āFor areas that are difficult to access during disasters, such as those without roads where sea or river routes are the only options, we must ensure that immediate assistance, such as food aid, is availableā she said.
Fatimah made these remarks after launching of the 2024 Central Zone MTL Preparedness Training, organised by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarawak, held at Kaul Oya site today.
She also emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards for all facilities and resources at temporary disaster evacuation centres.
āWhile disaster risk management continues to improve, it is crucial to remain prepared and have the correct standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place. The community must also be involved in disaster preparedness because local communities are the first responders when disasters strike,ā she added.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the MTL Preparedness Training for the Central Zone covered 10 districts, including Sibu, Kapit, Sarikei, Julau, Selangau, Mukah, Dalat, Daro, Matu and Tanjung Manis, with 160 APM personnel participating.
In total, 2,750 officers and members, along with 295 land and water assets, are on standby across Sarawak to respond to potential disasters during the monsoon season.
Among those present at the event were APM Sarawak director Mohtar Samat and Sarawak Welfare Department director Semawi Mohamad. ā DayakDaily
