MIRI, Oct 13: Some 3,000 people here got up very early this morning to “get physical’ at the Miri Indoor Stadium for the Miri-level National Sports Day.

Of those who turned up, more than 1,000 were cyclists from Kerbau Bull Club Miri taking part in the 30km `Fun Ride’. The rest were runners in the 4km `Fun Run’.

To further pumped up the ambience, a Zumba routine and other fitness challenges were also arranged.

Miri Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Michael Teo flagged off the event at 6.45am. Also present were Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon and officers from the Ministry of Sports and Youth (Miri office).

In his speech, Dr Teo called on more corparate bodies to do their bit for sports development. He reasoned that when sponsorships were sufficient, it would help the country produce world-class sports personalities.

In the case of Sarawak, for instance, it had successfully produced sporting talents like Pandelela Rinong (diver), Watson Nyambek (sprinter), Bryan Lomas (diving). They helped turned the state into a sporting powerhouse.

Dr Teo told those present that sports could also serve as a “unity tool”, where people from different races come together for a common cause.  — DayakDaily
