KUCHING, July 20: The Iban Customs Symposium 2026 is scheduled to be held in Sibu this September.
The symposium, organised by the Council for Native Customs and Traditions Sarawak (MAIS), is expected to bring together about 300 participants, comprising Iban community leaders, village chiefs, and representatives from Sarawak government agencies.
According to a press release, this followed a courtesy call from the ‘ketua’ (head) of MAIS, Datu Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat, to the Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, at Bangunan Baitulmakmur in Petra Jaya here today, where he was briefed on the symposium.
During the courtesy call, Sikie congratulated Neilson on his appointment for a three-year term, effective July 13, and extended his congratulations to Elsie William on her appointment as the new secretary for MAIS.
Sikie expressed hope that under the new leadership, MAIS would further strengthen its role in the preservation, development, and promotion of Sarawak’s native customs and traditions. — DayakDaily
