3 new Covid-19 clusters linked to plywood factory, oil palm plantations in Tatau

KUCHING, June 11: Outbreaks of Covid-19 have been identified in three workplaces in Tatau involving a plywood factory, a temporary settlement of an oil palm plantation and an oil palm estate that have also spread to a longhouse with a total of 85 cases confirmed from the three new clusters so far.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily updates on Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today, revealed that a total of 27 positive cases have been detected at a plywood factory located at Tatau Baru town which stemmed from social movement and close interaction.

This thus triggered the Pekan Tatau Baru Cluster, where the infection also spread to a longhouse in Nanga Tekalit in the same district.


A total of 742 individuals have been screened whereby 502 tested negative while 213 are still awaiting lab test results.

A cluster also formed in the temporary settlement of an oil palm plantation at Gabung Camp and a longhouse in Nanga Telakit located at Sungai Kakus area after 51 people were infected, causing the Sungai Kakus Cluster to be declared.

A total of 117 individuals have been screened whereby 14 tested negative while 52 are still awaiting lab test results.

Another cluster dubbed the Semanok Cluster with seven positive cases so far were discovered at an oil palm estate located at the Semanok area, also as a result of social movement and close interactions among workers of the estate.

A total of 196 individuals have been screened whereby 17 tested negative while 172 are still awaiting lab test results.

All positive cases were admitted to Bintulu Hospital and Quarantine and Low-Risk Centre (PKRC) Bintulu for treatment and isolation.

Meanwhile, all the localities involved including the longhouse at Nanga Telakit have been placed under two-weeks Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

These three clusters were among the four new Covid-19 clusters declared in Sarawak today with the other one identified at Kampung Kolong 2 in Kuching with 36 positive cases.

The State Health Department also declared the end of Sungai Rayah Cluster in Meradong after no new cases were reported in the last 28 days.

With that, the number of active clusters in Sarawak now stood at 80, out of which six clusters recorded an increase in daily infections of 27 cases.

They are Jalan Muara Tabuan Cluster in Kuching which picked up 16 cases and Jalan Coastal Bintulu-Miri Cluster in Bintulu (7 cases), while Jalan Brooke Cluster in Miri, Jalan Selirik Cluster in Kapit, Skim B Cluster in Meradong and Banting Cluster in Sri Aman added one case each. — DayakDaily
