MUKAH, Jan 3: A 28-year-old man is feared to have drowned after he was believed to have fallen from a boat while fishing alone at the Batang Oya River estuary here this morning.

The victim, identified as Awang Ismail Awang Rosidi, remains missing as of the latest update, with search and rescue (SAR) operations ongoing.

The Fire and Rescue Station (Bomba) Mukah received an emergency call at 9.23am regarding the incident and immediately dispatched a team to the location, located about 21 kilometres from the station.

According to a police report, information about the incident was relayed by the victim’s wife, who was informed that Awang Ismail was suspected to have fallen from his boat while at the river estuary.

Operations commander PBK I Stephen Plen said preliminary information from the victim’s family indicated that Awang Ismail had gone out earlier to the Batang Oya River estuary to carry out fishing activities before the incident occurred.

He added that the operations team, together with other relevant agencies, was at the Kaul Oya festival site to help identify the exact location where the victim was believed to have fallen, to facilitate search efforts. — DayakDaily
