KUCHING, Feb 14: A 250-acre pilot grain corn cultivation project in Sungai Darau, Bintangor, has proven commercially viable and could be expanded to bolster Sarawak’s food security, said Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
Following a recent site visit, he said the project is being carried out by Yumegro Plantation Sdn Bhd, which has been actively involved in grain corn cultivation for more than two years.
“The company’s operational experience has provided technical and practical insights relevant to scaling up the initiative.
“The pilot phase has shown the project to be workable and viable, forming a foundation for the proposed commercial development,” he said in a Facebook post, today.
Len said grain corn development is positioned as a strategic measure to reinforce food supply resilience in line with national food security objectives.
He added that integrated commercial-scale farming could enable Sarawak to advance local grain corn industry development while supporting transformation of the agri-food sector.
The model may be replicated in other suitable locations, subject to further assessment, he said. — DayakDaily
