KUCHING, Oct 18: A 23-year-old woman was killed, while a 22-year-old man was seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding was struck and dragged by a 4WD vehicle at Batu Kawah Bridge last night (Oct 17).
Padawan District Police Chief Superintendent Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed the deceased was Nur Ashikin Benny from Kampung Hijrah, Simunjan.
According to him, the two victims were en route from MJC Batu Kawah to Kampung Sejijak Matang at the time of the incident.
“While travelling in the left lane on Batu Kawah Bridge, their motorcycle was rear-ended by a 4WD vehicle, causing them to be flung onto the road.
“Subsequently, the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene with his vehicle,” he said in a statement today.
The female victim was pronounced dead at the scene by an assistant medical officer from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
The male victim, who suffered injuries to his face and hands, was transported to SGH for medical attention.
Abang Zainal added that the weather conditions were favourable, while the road was straight and well-illuminated when the incident occurred.
The police is actively searching for the pickup driver involved.
“We will be reviewing the footage from the closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) around the scene of the incident to identify the vehicle and are urging any witnesses to step forward to aid the investigation,” he said.
This case is under investigation according to Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — DayakDaily
