KUCHING, Nov 8: A 23-kilometre road that has long isolated Marudi’s rural communities will be completed two years ahead of schedule, giving residents safer travel and faster access to markets, schools, and essential services.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, when officiating the groundbreaking ceremony today, said the project underscores the State government’s commitment to rural development under the Sarawak Rural Transformation Initiative.

“This is not just about building a road. It is about creating opportunities. Better access will improve daily life for our rural communities, reduce travel hardship, and make it easier for farmers to bring their produce to market,” he said.

Currently, the route is accessible only by four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles and often becomes muddy and impassable during the rainy season. Once completed, the surfaced road will boost mobility, support local economic activities, and open new opportunities for residents.

The project includes upgrading 23 kilometres of road to JKR R1 standard, building two new concrete bridges, and completing related works. While the project is scheduled for 36 months, the contractor has pledged to finish it within 24 months.

Uggah highlighted that the Sarawak government has allocated RM724 million for 23 development projects in Marudi, of which six projects worth RM258 million have been completed, three worth RM134 million are ongoing, and 14 others valued at RM331 million are in the contract preparation stage.

“These efforts show our commitment to delivering development across all regions of Sarawak and ensuring equitable growth for every community,” he noted. DayakDaily
