21-year-old youth causes Covid-19 outbreak in secondary school, 3 longhouses in Sebauh after 67 cases detected

KUCHING, April 26:  A Covid-19 positive young man of age 21 has caused an outbreak of 66 among secondary school students and longhouse residents, giving rise to the Jalan Sebauh-Bintulu Cluster.

The Jalan Sebauh-Bintulu Cluster according to the statement of Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), is an educational as well as community cluster where apart from a secondary school, three longhouses in Jalan Sebauh-Bintulu in the Sebauh Distirct are also involved.


The 21-year-old young man, who is also Case 20986 went for a preliminary screening on April 13, 2021 and were found positive.  On April 21, 2021, he was confirmed to be Covid-19 positive through rt-PCR test.

Further investigation found that two students from the secondary school had close contact with this index case.

As a result of contact tracing and targeted screening of staff and students of the secondary school as well as longhouse residents, an additional 66 positive cases were detected where 20 of them were students from the secondary school.

A total of 318 individuals were screened following the detection of the index case.

Apart from the 67 individuals tested positive (including the index case) for Covid-19,  236 individuals were found to be negative while 15 are still waiting for their test results.

All 67 individuals who are tested positive for Covid-19 were referred to Bintulu Hospital and were admitted to Treatment and Quarantine Centres under Bintulu Hospital for isolation and further treatment. — DayakDaily
