KUCHING, Aug 9: A 20-year-old local man was arrested to assist in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run accident at Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling, near the KPJ Miri Specialist Hospital on Thursday (Aug 7).
In a statement, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the arrest was made at 5.17pm on Friday (Aug 8) following swift action by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division’s intelligence team after receiving information regarding the suspect’s involvement in the accident.
In addition to the suspect’s arrest, a vehicle was also seized.
“The accident case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years, upon conviction,” he said.
Road users are advised always to practise courteous driving and comply with traffic regulations to avoid endangering other road users.
The public is also reminded not to speculate or spread false information, as it could jeopardise the investigation and cause confusion among the community.
On Aug 7, it was reported that a 33-year-old local man was killed while walking along Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling near KPJ Specialist Hospital here at around 2am.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had earlier been drinking with a co-worker at a shop in Permyjaya.
The two were reportedly walking home to Krokop under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. — DayakDaily
