2 people, including 14yo girl arrested for suspected baby dumping after newborn rescued in Sibu

SIBU, Oct 30: Fast action by the police led to the arrest of two persons, including a 14-year-old girl pertaining to the discovery of a newborn baby boy in Jalan Tong Sang yesterday.

The two suspects according to Sibu district police chief ACO Zulkipli Suhaili said the 44-year-old man, and the teenage girl would be remanded today for investigation under Section 317 of the Penal Code, for concealing a birth with the intention of abandoning a baby.

The section carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both.

Touching on the case, Zulkipli said that at about 8.30am a member of the public called the Sibu District Control Center received a MERS 999 emergency claiming that he found a baby boy in a vegetable basket in a shophouse in Jalan Tong Sang.

“The baby was found with the uterus and umbilical cord still intact, believed to have been born less than 24 hours ago.

“The witness, a Chinese man, found the baby when he was passing by the area,” he said.

Zulkipli said the baby weighing 1.48 kg had been sent to Sibu Hospital for medical examination.

“The initial examination found that the baby was born normally and did not suffer any physical injury,” he said.
