KUCHING, June 1: Two individuals experiencing mental health crises in separate incidents at Batu Kawa and Belaga were safely assisted today, thanks to timely interventions.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the first incident in Batu Kawa occurred at 8.14am, prompting the deployment of firefighters from the Batu Lintang station.
Upon arrival, it was noted that a man was on top of the roof of a shop building. However, the report also noted that the station received a similar call at 3.40am, but no one was at the location when firefighters arrived.
The operations commander reported that efforts by Bomba and police personnel to engage with the individual were successful in preventing the incident.
The individual, an Indonesian national in his 30s working as a labourer, was then handed over to the police for further action.
For the second incident in Belaga, an emergency call was received at 8.53am, and firefighters from the Belaga station were deployed.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a 56-year-old unemployed man on the roof of a hotel.
Firefighters, along with personnel from the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), engaged with him to safely de-escalate the situation.
Their attempts were successful, and the individual was handed over to the police for further action.
Those struggling with their mental health are advised to contact the Befrienders Kuching helpline at 082-242800 to receive emotional support from 6.30pm to 9.30pm every day.
