SERIAN, Aug 17: Police have detained two men to assist in investigations into an alleged rape involving a 16-year-old girl, reportedly at a hostel in Serian.
Serian district police chief Supt Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said police received a report regarding the incident at about 6.45pm on Sunday (Aug 16).
“Investigations led to the arrest of an Indonesian man in his 30s in the Serian area. The suspect is believed to work at the same premises as the victim.
“Police also detained a local man in his 20s, who is a close acquaintance of the victim, to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.
He said police would apply for remand orders against both suspects to facilitate further investigations.
“The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
“For the Indonesian suspect, police are also checking his status and immigration movement records and will notify the relevant authorities as necessary,” he said. — DayakDaily
