2 killed, 3 injured in road crash in Niah

MIRI, March 12: Two people were killed and three others sustained multiple injuries following a head-on collision between two vehicles at Kampung Sepupok, Niah, early yesterday.

The two women killed have been identified as Chaterine Empina Galang, 37. and Mejelin Tingga Galang, 42. They were passengers in a Proton Persona that was heading towards Miri from Bintulu.


Chaterine and Mejelin were pronounced dead at Batu Niah health clinic.

According to Miri Bomba Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, when the alarm was raised at 7.19am that there was a crash at KM69 of the Bintulu-Miri Coastal road, a team comprising seven firemen rushed to the scene to find both vehicles mangled.

ā€œWhen the firemen reached the scene, all the victims from both vehicles have been taken out of the vehicles by passing motorists and nearby villagers,ā€ said Law.

The overturned four-wheel-drive (4WD) at the scene of the accident.

Meanwhile, state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the tragic accident happened at 6am.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Section 41(1) reads, `Any person who, by the driving of a motor vehicle on a road recklessly or at a speed or in a manner which having regard to all the circumstances (including the nature, condition and size of the road, and the amount of traffic which is or might be expected to be on the road) is dangerous to the public, causes the death of any person shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term of *not less than two years and not more than ten years and to a fine not less than five thousand ringgit and not more than twenty thousand ringgit.ā€™ ā€” DayakDaily
