KUCHING, Aug 14: A 19-year-old youth has been ordered to serve a one-year good behaviour bond after admitting to involvement in online gambling activities.
The Magistrate’s Court issued the order today after Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan reviewed a social report on the offender submitted by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
The youth had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a penalty of up to RM5,000 in fines, a jail term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
According to case facts, the incident occurred on April 23 at around 3.55pm during an anti-gambling operation (Op Dadu) at a 24-hour convenience store along Jalan Singai-Matang.
A police officer leading the raid observed the premises for several minutes before approaching the accused, who was seated at a table. Upon identifying himself as a police officer, the officer and his team conducted a search and discovered a mobile phone containing evidence of online gambling activity.
The team also seized other items suspected to be linked to gambling, including a pen, a printed paper containing gambling ID numbers, and RM101 in cash.
Subsequent investigation and an expert gambling report confirmed that the mobile phone had been used to place online bets. — DayakDaily
