KUCHING, June 21: A 19-year-old local teenager has been arrested in connection with an incident in which a woman was allegedly secretly recorded while using a toilet at a restaurant in Bekenu, Miri.

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the arrest followed the circulation of a 28-second video on Facebook related to the incident.

He confirmed that police received a report from the victim, who alleged that she had been recorded while inside the toilet of a restaurant in Bekenu.

Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred at about 10am on June 20, when the suspect allegedly used a mobile phone to record the woman while she was in the toilet.

“The victim became aware of the suspect’s actions and subsequently lodged a police report at the Bekenu Police Station,” he said in a statement.

Following the report, police personnel from Bekenu Police Station gathered information and launched an operation, leading to the suspect’s arrest in the Bekenu area at approximately 11.30am on the same day.

The suspect, a local man employed as a truck attendant, was also found in possession of a mobile phone believed to have been used during the incident. The device has been seized for further investigation.

Police checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 377D of the Penal Code for outraging decency, which carries a prison sentence of up to two years upon conviction.

Mohd Farhan stressed that police will not compromise with any criminal acts and will ensure that those arrested are brought before the courts to face justice in accordance with the law.

He said firm enforcement is necessary to safeguard public safety and maintain peace and order in the Miri district at all times. — DayakDaily
