KUCHING, March 28: Eighteen nations will compete in the 2025 Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying ITF World Junior Tennis U14 Boys & Girls tournament, which will be hosted at Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre from March 31 to April 15.
Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced the event during a press conference, highlighting Sarawak’s honour in being selected as the host.
“This tournament represents one of the important pathways for young players aiming to establish themselves on the international tennis stage.
“With the participation of 18 nations, namely Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong (China), India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia, this competition will undoubtedly be a showcase of skill, determination, and sportsmanship,” he said at his office in Baitulmakmur II building today.
A total of 32 teams will be competing, with the top four teams from each Girls and Boys category advancing to the final round, which is expected to take place in July or August, with the venue yet to be decided.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has provided a USD51,200 grant or RM230,000 to support hospitality expenses such as meals, local transportation, and accommodation for participating teams.
Additionally, Sarawak will host a welcoming and fellowship dinner for players, coaches, and officials, underscoring its commitment to making the event a memorable experience for all involved.
Beyond the tournament, Abdul Karim who is also the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), encouraged visitors to explore Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, diverse culinary delights, and breathtaking natural landscapes.
Abdul Karim extended his appreciation to ITF, SLTA, sponsors, officials, and volunteers for their contributions in making the event possible.
“To all the young athletes, competing at this level is no small feat. I encourage you to give your best, embrace the spirit of fair play, and create lifelong friendships through this sport,” he added. – DayakDaily
