KUCHING, Sept 24: The Election Commission (EC) has received 18 objections to the proposed Sarawak electoral boundary review, with the process expected to take beyond February 2027, making it unlikely that the State’s proposed 17 new seats will be used in the upcoming Sarawak election.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the boundary review would require more time to complete, while the current term of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly is due to expire in February 2027.
“The term of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly expires in February 2027, so based on the process we need to go through, I expect we will not be able to use the new seats in the next state election,” he told reporters after visiting the exhibition venue for the proposed Sarawak Electoral Boundary Review at the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) here today.
Ramlan said the 18 objections received so far involved various issues, including proposed changes to polling district centres.
“There were also several objections concerning the names of certain state constituencies in Sarikei, Bintulu and Sibu. We will assess and examine these matters in greater detail later,” he said.
In July, the Sarawak Legislative Assembly passed the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Members) Bill 2025, paving the way for 17 additional state seats and increasing the total number from 82 to 99.
The proposed boundary review is part of the process to determine the constituencies for the expanded 99-seat assembly. — Bernama
