MIRI, July 4: Sarawak Energy has uncovered a power theft operation costing an estimated RM7,000 per month, with 17 cryptocurrency mining servers seized from a double-storey semi-detached house along Jalan Pujut here.

According to a media release today, the illegal activity was discovered during a joint operation by Sarawak Energy’s operations and retail arm, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco), and the police.

Investigators found that electricity was siphoned directly from the main supply through unmetered connections that bypassed the electricity meter entirely.

During the raid, illegal tapping cables and 17 crypto mining machines were confiscated.

A police report has been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which provides for a fine up to RM200,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment upon conviction.

Sarawak Energy warned that such unauthorised connections are not only illegal but also highly dangerous. They often bypass safety mechanisms, increasing the risk of electrocution, electrical fires, and serious damage to neighbouring properties.

The utility company also reminded property owners, especially landlords, to stay vigilant and perform regular checks on their properties.

“Unusual electricity consumption, tampered meters, or rooms equipped with constant cooling systems may be signs of illicit activity,” it advised, adding that landlords could still be held accountable if they neglect proper oversight of their tenants’ use of electricity.

Sarawak Energy reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with enforcement agencies to curb power theft and called on the public to report suspicious activity.
